The work above is by the well recognised Graphic Designer, Paul Rand. The situation of this piece of illustration is in the tertiary sector. In this sector, illustration is used as a means to aid in advertising a product or service. Due to the aim being to make sales, the type of illustration used is often eye-catching and attractive in a way that will lure consumers toward the product/service. This logo in particular has been extremely successful and helped to create an instantly recognisable and memorable brand for IBM. Due to the extremely competitive nature of this industry, it's imperative that the visual identity for a company is able to draw a wide range of people.
The editorial application of this illustration for, The Washington Post, sits in the quaternary sector of the economy. It accompanies knowledge(/opinion) based media which the illustration works to outline. Due to the nature of this application, the design works to communicate quite a specific politically related fact. In this instance the illustration works particularly well to highlight the current stance of the American government in relation to climate change and it's handling. This message is clearly communicated within the image through a detailed imagination of the situation.
Here is a poster design produced by, Aaron Lowell Denton. The aim of this piece is to advertise a concert. This means that the work sits somewhere between the private sector and service industry. This is due to the fact that the aim of this piece is to advertise an event which is targeted towards fans, but in other words, consumers. This particular design utilises a pure style with an attentive consideration in the design. I'd imagine that it would be successful in attracting the attention of consumers as it works in a way that helps to present a visual understanding of the music that one may experience at the concert. This is a successful strategy in reaching a wide group of people, as well as self advertising for the designer as well.
Here we have an example of illustration situated within the public sector. The use of illustration in this sector is for simple and straight forward infographic information. Usually as a means of directing, informing or warning - the use of illustration in this area is predominantly quite bland and clear in its message. They are usually very successful in their roles and are heavily recognised by people from a range of areas/cultures. This is a vital element within these applications, universality is a must as they often work to prevent danger.
Produced by, Banksy, this is an example of illustration in the public sector. However, this time the use of it is to provoke thought about a certain topic. Be it political, social or environmental for example. This is an extremely important area for art/design as it's in this kind of situation where there is potential to spark change in public opinion.
